Crystal clear in colour, the aroma is typical of Marasca cherry distillate with strong alcohol spirit and roasted nuttiness, while the taste results smooth but sharp at the same time with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla and orange marmalade.
Process
Marasca cherries, leaves and branches are put in alcoholic infusion in vats for up to three years. Once ready, this mix is distilled in copper pot stills. The distillate is then allowed to mature in ash-wood vats, before water and sugar are added.
People
Girolamo Luxardo (a representative of the Kingdom of Sardinia), moved to Zara with his family in 1817, where his wife Maria became especially interested in perfecting Rosolio Marachino. Six generations have since been at the helm.
Place
Founded in Zara in 1821, Luxardo became one of the largest distilleries in the Austro – Hungarian Empire. At the end of WWI, Zara became incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy and after WWII they rebuilt the distillery in Torreglia.
