Dupont VSOP Calvados is one for the purists - a delicious Calvados aged for a minimum of four years in both new and old casks to give a rich combination of complex and mature flavours.
This release has notes of toasted oak and vanilla and fresh fruit on the nose. To taste, it begins sweet with soft apple, before oak progresses into the finish that lingers with light vanilla, soft almond and hay.
To create this calvados apples are mixed, crushed and pressed, then after 6 months the juice is fermented and double distilled. It's aged for over five years in toasted 400 litre oak barrels, 25% of which are new.
The history of the Dupont Family goes back more than three centuries. The oldest known archives testify to the birth of Pierre Dupont in 1703. It was in 1887 that Jules Dupont first produced calvados alongside his cattle raising activity.
The Famille Dupont's estate consists of seventy four acres of orchards in Normandy, in the heart of the Pays d'Auge region in France. The clay and Oxfordian marl soil on which the apples grow is on full display here.
