Aged for 13 months in a blend of American and French oak, Ilegal Añejo Mezcal is widely recognised for its quality. Maple on the nose with sweet agave notes to taste - it's so smooth!
Ilegal Mezcal uses 100% Espadin agave that is roasted in earthen pits using mesquite and eucalyptus wood. The cooked agave is then finely crushed and fermented in oak vats before being double distilled in small copper stills.
Ilegal Añejo Mezcal has maple, clove, and bitter orange aromas that give a rounded and rich sensation. Dark chocolate and sweet agave emerge alongside the smoke on the palate. Perfect for a summer evening.
Ilegal Mezcal was founded in 2006 by John Rexer, who began by smuggling this product into his Bar, Cafe No Se, in Antigua, Guatemala. The brand is now part owned by Bacardi, with production headed up by Alvaro and Armando Hernandez
Ilegal Añejo Mezcal is created in Oaxaca, Mexico. Originally the founder brought down unbranded mezcal from a variety of villages in Oaxaca that included: Tlacolula, San Lorenzo, Sola De Vega, Santa Catarina Minas and a few others.
Ilegal Reposado Mezcal is velvety throughout with a caramelised pear and bitter orange note and on the nose. It's an exceptional mezcal for those who like to drink theirs straight up.
"Although purists will assert that mezcal should not be oak-aged, I think Ilegal is a great example of a favourable outcome of aging mezcal. Enjoy it neat, or use it as a base in aromatic cocktail like the Sweet Manhattan or Old Fashioned. "
