Aperol needs no introduction as the ultimate aperitif. Its unique bittersweet taste and vibrant orange colour derive from a secret and original recipe, that has remained unchanged since 1919.
The aroma has zesty orange with complex herbal scents, along with a touch of vanilla just beneath. Less bitter than Campari, but to taste has similar intense orange top notes with a herbal, woody body. Serve in a Spritz!
It is made by infusing ingredients such as bitter and sweet oranges, rhubarb, quinine and gentian together in a process similar to Campari. Notably, it's much lower in ABV, which is why it makes for such a light and refreshing drink.
Aperol was especially created in 1919 by Luigi and Silvio Barbieri for the Padua International Fair, an international exhibition held in their hometown. Since 2003 it has been part of Gruppo Campari.
Originally more heavily associated as being a Venetian spirit, Aperol is now a cult classic in the Aperitivo world and less city specific. It is made at one (or several) of Gruppo Campari's eighteen plants worldwide.
Famed aperitif and an essential component for those seeking to make a Negroni or Americano, Campari is a booze hound's cabinet necessity.
"Can’t imagine life without Campari, there’s something about it that just keeps pulling me back. Take a mouthful and let it coat the inside of your mouth and hold it for a few moments to explore it fully and appreciate its bittersweet complexity."
A delicious, light saffron-coloured aperitivo from grappa maestros Nonino that offers a more subtle and flexible blending partner than classic red aperitivos.
Half way between Aperol and Campari, Doppelgänger is a London made Aperitivo that's perfect for making a Spitz.
