The Laphroaig distillery was founded by farmers, Donald and Alexander Johnston, in 1815. They acquired land for cattle but quickly realised they could earn more making and selling whisky with the grains they grew, instead of feeding the cattle.
Pronounced “La-froyg”, the distillery is named after its location which is located at the head of Loch Laphroaig on the south coast of Islay in Scotland.
