Paloma: A Citrus-Infused Journey into Mexico's Cocktail Culture

Paloma: A Citrus-Infused Journey into Mexico's Cocktail Culture

Posted by Spirits Kiosk on 12 Jun 2023

Have you ever found yourself longing for a refreshing cocktail that isn't a margarita but still screams Mexico?

Look no further than the Paloma, a classic Mexican drink that blends the tangy flavours of grapefruit and lime with the smooth taste of tequila.

Refreshing Paloma Cocktail

History in a Highball Glass

The exact origin of the Paloma is shrouded in mystery, much like many classic cocktails. Some accounts attribute it to Don Javier Delgado Corona, owner of the renowned La Capilla bar in Tequila, Jalisco. But, regardless of its genesis, it's a drink that has truly become embedded in the Mexican cocktail culture.

Named after the Spanish word for 'dove,' the Paloma has soared in popularity in Mexico and beyond, and while nothing will surpass the iconic margarita as the country’s most beloved tequila-based cocktail for a while – it’s certainly broadened the repertoire of agave heads and those just starting out alike.

What does a Paloma taste like?

The Paloma is bright, refreshing and full of zest. The cocktail strikes a perfect balance between the bitterness of grapefruit, the sourness of lime, the sweetness of simple syrup and the robustness of tequila.

This harmony of flavours ensures that the drink is neither too tart nor too sweet, but perfectly situated in the middle. The fizz from the soda water adds a delightful effervescence that makes it an ideal choice for a warm summer's day or a social gathering.

Top Tips for a Perfect Paloma

Whichever you make, the beauty of the Paloma lies in the simplicity of flavours. Without changing that, a few easy tricks can elevate your cocktail game:

Always use fresh juice: This might seem like a no-brainer, but fresh juice makes a significant difference. It adds a level of brightness and acidity that cannot be replicated with from-concentrate juice.

Choose your tequila wisely: Blanco or silver tequila works best for those who like their Paloma bright and citrusy because the agave note is pure and allows the grapefruit to shine. That said, for those who like the fuller versions with less zing but more woody depth, a well-chosen Reposado is liquid gold.

Don’t forget the salt: A pinch of salt enhances the fruity flavours and takes the edge off the grapefruit's bitterness.
