Masataka Taketsuru is the founder of Nikka Whisky. He enrolled at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, becoming the first Japanese ever to study the art of whisky-making. Later he returned to Japan and produced the country's first single malt whisky.
In 1934 Masataka opened the Nikka Whisky Co distillery in the town of Yoichi. Later, his second distillery was located in foggy glen surrounded by mountains and at a junction of two clean rivers, by coincidence the name of the river was Nikkawa.
